Audience of the finals up by +147% compared to the previous year

CINCINNATI, June 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The 2022 Scripps Spelling Bee National Finals drew its biggest TV audience since 2015.

Overall, Spelling Bee’s programming on the Scripps Networks was viewed by 7.5 million viewers**. This includes the finals, semi-finals and the original one-hour “Road to the Bee” special.

The EW Scripps Company decided last fall to move the bee to its own networks in a bid to make the competition more accessible than in recent years, with the semi-finals and finals airing for the first time on the networks of national television Scripps ION, Bounce, Laff and TrueReal. These networks can be found for free and live as well as on cable and streaming platforms.

Other highlights:

  • The live finals broadcast on ION, Bounce, Laff and TrueReal combined to reach 3.7 million viewers**, while the semi-finals on June 1 reached 3.1 million viewers – the highest viewership ever for the semi-finals.
  • Streaming has greatly increased the overall viewership. In total, Bee’s programming has been watched for almost 5 million hours (4.5 million on linear TV and 320,000 on streaming).
