Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy series is one of the latest of its kind to get the Netflix treatment. Although in reality, the show is probably inspired in equal parts by the books and CD Projekt Red’s acclaimed video game adaptations. Surely, fans of either can find plenty to love in this streaming series from showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who also served as a producer on Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Defenders, and The Umbrellas Academy, among other shows.
The Witcher follows the saga of the title hero, Geralt of Rivia. Geralt (played by Henry Cavill) is a monster hunter with (or possibly cursed) supernatural abilities. The show features the witch Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Princess Ciri (Freya Allan), whose fates are intertwined with Geralt’s. Also cast in the series are Eamon Farren as the Dark Knight and Joey Batey as Geralt’s friend and traveling bard, Dandelion. Anna Shaffer plays the witch Triss Merigold, Kim Bodnia plays Geralt’s mentor Vesemir, and MyAnna Buring is Tissaia de Vries.
Seasons 1 and 2 of The Witcher are currently available on Netflix and include eight episodes each. Filming for Season 3 began in April 2022 and completed early September, and is currently in post-production as of this writing. A prequel miniseries titled The Witcher: Origin of Blood.
