Guj: Gunmen rob bank by holding staff at gunpoint in Bharuch; four inmates

Five gunmen robbed a bank holding staff hostage at gunpoint and decamped with Rs 44 lakh in the town of Ankleshwar, Bharuch district, Gujarat, police said on Friday. Police have successfully apprehended four of the defendants for the robbery which took place at a Union Bank of India branch on Thursday afternoon, an official said.

While one of the robbers was captured following a chase and shooting by police on Thursday, the other three were arrested in the early hours of the morning in an industrial area, said HR Inspector Vala of the Ankleshwar City Police.

Police recovered stolen money to the tune of Rs 38 lakh from the arrested accused, he said.

In CCTV footage released by police, five gunmen can be seen entering the Union Bank of India branch and threatening staff by pointing guns at them.

Upon learning of the theft from bank staff, police rushed to the scene and chased the accused as he fled with Rs 44 lakh in cash, Vala said. “The accused opened fire on the police team during the chase, and one of the robbers was shot and wounded in the crossfire. We recovered Rs 22 lakh from him and he was admitted to hospital .”

Bharuch district police formed several teams and launched a search operation in a nearby industrial area to catch the remaining defendants, Vala said. “After an overnight operation, we managed to nab three more with Rs 16 lakh in cash. The fifth defendant, who stole cash to the tune of Rs 6 lakh, is still at large,” added the manager.

Police recovered 4 home-made pistols from the defendants, who are from Bihar, Vala said.
