ITV’s Vera: River Tyne turns into TV for hit crime drama Vera

The Tyne was transformed into a television set as scenes from the hit crime drama Vera were filmed.

Bafta-winning actress Brenda Blethyn was on the banks of the River Tyne this week as part of filming for the popular show’s fourth series.

She was joined by the cast and crew on the historic Dunston Staithes, near the Redheugh Bridge.

Later scenes showing a body pulled from the river were filmed.

It is believed that the team, which began filming the fourth series in August, will remain at the river site until Wednesday.

Passers-by watched and took photos as Blethyn and her co-star David Leon, who plays DS Joe Ashworth, stepped into character.

Previous episodes of Vera have featured the Newcastle city center pub The Bridge and the town of Hexham in Northumberland.

The third series was on our screens on ITV last month and the fourth is scheduled to air in the spring.

In August, the cast and crew were on location in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, filming in Earsdon, Marine Avenue in the Arcades, along the coast and at the Rendezvous Cafe.

The television series is based on the works of Whitley Bay crime writer Ann Cleeves.

Star Blethyn has been in the area for five months while filming each series in the series. Usually she stays in hotels, but her last stay in the Northeast saw the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-nominated actress renting a cabin and feeling at home in the area.

Often, her husband, artistic director Michael Mayhew, whom she married in 2010 after 35 years together, comes to spend the weekend. Her career began at the National Theater and she made her television debut in 1980 in Mike Leigh’s Grown-Ups.

Lead roles quickly followed in a number of sitcoms, including Chance in a Million and The Labors of Erica.

Her big screen debut was in The Witches in 1990, but it was Mike Leigh’s Secrets and Lies six years later that made her famous. Since then, she has appeared in a range of films, from indie comedies to big budget dramas.
