The 9 Best TV Shows Touring or Touring in San Diego

With the successful premiere of a new TV show touring and filming in San Diego on Thursday, we wanted to pick up on some of the best that came before it.

The latest, “Pitch”, is about a young pitcher who becomes the first woman to play in Major League Baseball. In the first episode, several backdrops familiar to the locals appeared, and there are likely more to come.

Where else can you see San Diego on TV?

These shows:


Renegade

When: 1992-1997

Notable actors: Lorenzo Lamas, Branscombe Richmond, Kathleen Kinmont

What it was about: “He was a cop and good at his job, but he committed the ultimate sin and testified against other cops gone wrong… cops who tried to kill him but got the woman he loved to the place. Accused of murder, he’s now roaming the badlands, an outlaw chasing outlaws, a bounty hunter, a renegade.

Connection to San Diego: It was shot in San Diego. And, let’s be realistic. It just gives our city a great name.


Terrier

When: 2010

Notable actors: Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James

What it was about: Logue played a hapless private investigator and Raymond-James played a recently reformed petty thief. The two together start a private, unlicensed investigation company.

Connection to San Diego: The two main characters are said to have lived and worked in Ocean Beach. The show was shot there, but also across the county, from the Del Mar Fairgrounds to North Park.


Véronique Mars

When: 2004-2007

Notable actors: Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III

What it was about: 17-year-old Veronica Mars is an amateur private investigator who tries to solve mysteries in a wealthy fictional town called Neptune.

Connection to San Diego: »Neptune ”was actually San Diego. The show was filmed at Kearny Mesa, Ocean Beach and beyond. He even recreated a Tijuana border scene in the parking lot of Qualcomm Stadium. And of course, Veronica’s office was above Lestat’s cafe on Adams Avenue.


Simon & Simon

When: 1981-1989

Notable actors: Gerald McRaney, Jameson Parker, Mary Carver

What it was about: Two very different brothers work together to run a private investigative agency that takes them all over San Diego and beyond.

Connection to San Diego: The show was set in San Diego and filmed many scenes here, including Horton Plaza, Balboa Park, and even the opening scene of the Coronado Bridge cruise.


The Real World: San Diego

When: 2004, 2011

Notable actors: Jamie Chung, Cameran Eubanks, Alexandra Govere

What it was about: MTVThe Real World “jumps from town to town, each year picking a new cast of young people who live together and are filmed for a reality show.

Connection to San Diego: Whether you think this qualifies for the “best” list or not, it’s quite surprising that more reality shows haven’t been filmed in a city as beautiful as San Diego, so this one is part of the. listing. The seasons were shot in homes in Point Loma (2004) and Bird Rock in La Jolla (2011).


Drake and Josh

When: 2004-2007

Notable actors: Drake Bell, Josh Peck, Miranda Cosgrove

What it was about: Drake and Josh go to the same school but have very different personalities and lives. Then their parents get married and the series chronicles their adventures as new brothers.

Connection to San Diego: Okay, this one wasn’t shot in San Diego, but the brothers and their families were certainly known to live in San Diego, and it was one of the most beloved Nickelodeon shows of the 2000s.


The Foster

When: 2013-present

Notable actors: Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Jake T. Austin

What it was about: The Fosters are a multi-ethnic family made up of adoptive and biological children raised by two mothers. Their lives are chronicled on the show as it explores the realities of foster care and other issues facing modern families.

Connection to San Diego: This show is just set in San Diego, but one of the moms supposedly works for the San Diego Police Department. This one is still on the air, so if you want to see it, check out Freeform (formerly ABC Family).

Notable actors: Kylie Bunbury, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mark Consuelos

What it was about: Ginny Baker is playing a pitcher with an amazing damn who is called upon to play for the San Diego Padres.

Connection to San Diego: Much of the filming was done here in San Diego in the spring and, duh, the Padres!
